Understanding Entry-Level Driver Training
Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is a federally mandated training requirement established by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to ensure new commercial drivers receive standardized education before operating commercial motor vehicles. ELDT CDL training sets minimum national standards for knowledge and safety, helping drivers enter the industry better prepared and more compliant with federal regulations.
Under FMCSA ELDT requirements, drivers must complete approved theory training before they are permitted to take certain CDL knowledge or skills tests. These rules apply to individuals seeking their first CDL, upgrading an existing license, or adding specific endorsements such as hazardous materials, passenger, or school bus.
ELDT training online must be completed before scheduling the applicable CDL skills or endorsement exams. Once training is finished, completion is electronically reported to the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, allowing state licensing agencies to verify compliance before testing eligibility is granted.
